Lab Report On The Biology Department - 921 Words

Introduction The Biology Department requested the identity of seven different samples. The aqueous ionic solutions were sent to be disposed of by the company Enviro Safe, Inc. However, the shipment containing seven, five-gallon carboys, was labeled Experiment 9 and did not include the names of solutions. The faculty in the Biology Department was unfamiliar with the contents but was able to locate a pre-laboratory notebook dated ten years prior, the notes only revealed that eight unknown solutions were involved in the experiment. Enviro Safe would have charged $350 per carboy to analysis the products if not identified by the laboratory class. In order to save the department money all seven samples had to be labeled correctly and the identity of the one missing solution revealed. To fulfill the Biology Department’s request, the experiment involved mixing the solutions together two at a time so the reactions, if any, could help determine the names of each solution. Experimental Safety goggles were worn at all times. Soapy, tap water was utilized to clean seven small test tubes; all were thoroughly rinsed with tap water. A paper towel was used to completely dry all moisture from the glassware. Using the dropper provided with the bottle, 20 drops of solution 1 were added to one of the clean test tubes. Solution 7 and solution 1 was combined by adding 20 drops of solution 7 into the small test tube already containing solution 1. The World (4402 words) Essay The WorldThe World The world is a messed up place and we are all stuck here until our lives are through, or until we choose to leave. It’s strange that I go along with everything everyone tells me, such as that I should ware certain cloths or listen to certain songs. I often wonder why I do the things I do, but then I just realize that’s who I am. People are confused about why they are here and they don’t understand what life is supposed to be about. They think that they should be a certain way or think a certain way, but they are all wrong. We should all act however we want to and not let the world influence us. Chapter one When I was a child I thought that the world was to big for me to understand, but I was wrong. The world is easy to understand if you’re not crazy. All you got to do is realize that no one really knows what he or she is doing or where he or she is going. Every day that I wake up I wish that the world would change to where it was all rig ht to be who you really are. Instead you have got to be what the world wants you to be. Its sad that these days a child can be left out of a certain group because his parents cant afford the outrageously expensive cloths that the other kids ware. This may cause the child to feel less encouraged to try in school or other activities. This is the kind of small thinking that causes a teen to act out in violence. After years of being picked on and labeled as a trouble maker just because of who he or she is and were he/she comes from. Society often blames parents or television for these tragedies because they cant admit that their own selfishness and lack of respect for those less fortunate is the true poison of the world. I once saw a man sitting on a street corner playing a guitar with his guitar case open. People passed him without looking or listening. Every now and then someone would toss some loose change or even a dollar, but they still never herd the music the man was playing. I s tood and listened for about ten minutes to what was the greatest live version of â€Å"Free Bird† that I had ever heard. When the man finished I offered him some money not so people would see me doing but because I thought his performance was well worth it. The man just smiled at me and declined it saying, â€Å"no thanks, your applauds are all the payment I was looking for.† That was the moment in my life when I realized the world had it all wrong and society was blind. I was twelve years old. Since that day I’ve been on a quest to in some way show the world what I was fortunate enough to learn. I’ve tried in many ways to show my peers that it’s ok to do your own thing and not follow others. Often I’ve just been criticized for my actions and told that I was being ridiculous, which in a few extreme cases was true, but I didn’t let that stop me. Over the past six years of my life I’ve crawled out of what could be called the filt h of society and established myself as an â€Å"outstanding young man† in order to get people to notice my examples I’m trying to set. Of course I totally despise myself for the levels I’ve stooped to in order to get where I am today. Never the less, I believe if you’re going to do something right u might as well go all out. So I guess by writing this I’m trying to finalize the actions that have taken place in my life during what are suppose to be the most important years of a teens life. Perhaps this book will help open a few eyes and turn a few heads but more then likely it will just be criticized and manipulated my several people that are just afraid of the honest to god truth of the lives that we live. Yet, if it does only change one persons view on things and helps them to make at least one decision on their own then I shall be satisfied. Chapter Two Well I guess the best place to begin this venture into my own reality is to start at the base of the problem. Now I know I’m treading on thin ice with this entire book so forgive me if you get a fended by the truth. I think it all begins at home with the parents of young Americans. You see, in order for someone to grow up with frame of mind thinking that you should be a certain way they must first be taught to think this way. The best example would have to be a young white middle class male growing up in the south during the rise of the Klu Klux Klan. From birth this young man is taught to dislike black Americans for no other reason then the fact that his redneck father tells him to. Now the ignorance of this child’s father leads him to have an unknown hatred that he will pass on to his children (after his sister gives birth to them) that will pass it on to their children. So know you have several generations of racist rednecks just because back in the day their great grandfather thought it was the cool thing to do. Now take a similar situation in modern day Ne w York with a black family that hates whites because their grandparents where slaves. They show the same ignorance as the white redneck that doesn’t now any better because that’s the way they were both raised and they both know there is no need for this racism against each other but there are to many out side influences telling them otherwise. Its sad when some many differences can easily be solved if we would just take off the blind fold long enough to see the truth, that we are all human on the same planet trying to accomplish the same goals. Racism is a terrible thing and I could probably write a whole book on it, but I’m not going to. My goal is to show several points in depth yet this topic, witch is the cancer of society, is one that I choose to vaguely touch base on then move on. So I think I’ve maid my point clear. If not then I shall briefly restate it. â€Å" Don’t let ignorance blind you from the truth person before you†. Another great example of the some what tragic influence parent have on their kids could be best described using what I like to call the â€Å"Do as I say not as I do† scenario. This shows how hypocritical parents can be in trying to better them selves through their child’s life. The best case would be a nine year old child who is scared to strike out in baseball not because it would let his team down but because it would upset his father who by the way never played baseball worth a damn but if you ask him he was the greatest and his son will be to. Now you have the same kid as a senior in high school playing a game that he hates but pretends he loves because that’s just how it should be. The same guy is also dating the head cheerleader and cheating on her with two other girls for no reason other then the fact that his old man did the same thing in high school. This kind of irresponsible parenting is what often causes athletes to over do themselves and miss growing up. I ’ve met to many teen that fill that they must devote their young lives to nothing but pleasing their parents, instead of themselves. These are the same kids that when cute loose at college often flunk out because for the first time they get to experience life. They fall into the party seen and fall behind in their studies. I’m not suggesting that parents should let their kids run free with out rules or boundaries, but at least let them make their own mistakes and learn from them so they don’t fall apart in the real world. I sometimes find myself cursing my parents for not giving me this attention that I’ve described. Yet, if they had sheltered me from the truth I don’t think I’d be the person who I am today. My parent split up when I was nine years old and while they where busy fighting with each other my older brother was the one that thought me about life and how I have the ability to do what I want and make my own choices. He thought me h ow to take care of myself when others where to caught up in their lives to notice what I needed. When he left for boot camp at the end of my sixth grade year I found myself virtually alone for the first time in my life. Don’t get me wrong; my parents are not bad people. They just had their own problems and I didn’t want to bother them with mine. So after running into some trouble with the law I made the choice to change my life and make something of it. This meant changing my friends and my bad reputation I had developed through my tougher younger years. I got involved in sports because I wanted to and I made some great friends that I will never lose. I also found out that I had a great mind for helping people. This is when I first encountered the pressure that most kids where going through with their parents. These where guys that I had admired because I thought they had it all, a great family and great athletic ability. I soon found out just how lucky I was to be abl e to live my own life. While this freedom made me seem like somewhat of a rebel to most parents, it made me seem like a gimps of hope to my peers. Some adults applauded me for my efforts while others saw me as a glitch in their brainwashing scheme. Don’t take this the wrong way, I wasn’t like Jone of arch or anything I was just a glimpse of what most of my friends would one-day experience. I was the truth about what was waiting for them outside of their parents’ shell that they had been confided to for their whole lives. It’s to bad that parents shelter their kids for as long as they do. If they would only see that most kids will get involved with sports and do good in school on their own if they would just get the chance to figure life out on their own, and if they don’t then they probably wont once they are turned loose from their gravy chain. Chapter 3 The largest problem with today society is the constant pressure that teens have put on them by the world of entertainment. While most things on television aren’t bad it’s the little things that make it hard to be a teen. In the days of the boy bands and the rap rock groups most teens are torn between being a â€Å"punk†, with long hair and no real fashion statement other then blue jeans and a t-shirt, and being a â€Å"prep† with gelled hair and tight cloths. This often causes large groups of divers people to cling to those more like themselves. In the splitting of these two groups I’ve seen the best of friends turn the other way when passing each other in the hall. Now it is possible for the two groups to coincide with each other but it often takes a certain few individuals to bring them together. These people are known as the peace keeps. The ones that don’t choose either side, but choose to be them selves. They are respected by both sides and give to different people a mutual friend. This may only be my personal opinion or the way I see things at my school, but no matter where or when people should be able to relate to what I’m talking about. Through out history there have always been different groups of people living close to each other in society. This is just the way the world works. Yet, in the past ten years there has been a large out burst of â€Å"free thinkers†. What I often find up setting is that in order to fit in with today’s fashion trends you have to be able to afford the more expensive brands of cloths. Why should a teen be looked down upon just because his or her family can’t afford the most expensive pair of shoes or pants? If you had the chance to walk through the halls of most high schools it would not be hard to pick out the different groups of kids. I guarantee that one thing you are able to notice between the groups is the label on their cloths. There is not much of a difference between Gap jeans and Lee jeans, except about twenty or thirty dollars. This is e nough to separate the richer class from the lower class. I say lower class because I want you to understand that these families are not pour. They are just your average class family that works hard to provide for their kids and give them a home, food, and education that they may not have had growing up. When you are living on a fixed income there is often not enough room in the family budget for fancy and expensive cloths. This often hurts the way a teen sees them. They think they are dirt pour and they resent those kids that have more then them. Then this builds a strong hate between both groups because one has more and the other is just often times stuck up and doesn’t realize how they look down on others. This is the worst problem with society today. There is just too big of a gap between classes that makes it hard for a lot of kids to relate to each other. Chapter 4 In the previous and rather short chapters I have pointed out the factors that I believe lead to what I call the â€Å"No Way Out† problem that most teens experience around the last two years of high school. This problem can affect all types of teens in several different ways. From the jock that feels that he is being forced to play college ball like his father, to the middle class out cast that doesn’t know what to do with his life. They are all forced to work out this problem on their own despite how many people say they can help them. What finally decides which ones are successful in life is how they choose to handle this problem. Take the jock for instance that cant decide if he wants to play in college. If playing ball is the only way he can get into college then he has not choice but to do what he canned. Yet, if the only reason he accepts a college scholar ship is because his father wants him to even though he is smart enough to get into college with out sports, then which decision should he make? On one hand he will make his father proud witch is what he has been doi ng his whole life. On the other hand he could fulfill his own dream of going to a college that is not focused manly on sports. If he follows his father then he will always be known has a joke, if he follows his dream then he will be known for his brilliance. The choice is his, but which road will lead to happiness? Some say the dream, but others say the happiness of a loving father out weighs any dream. While I will agree that this may not be a large problem it still puts a lot of pressure on a teen while trying to finish out your high school years. And in his world this may have been the biggest problem of his life, while in another it was icing on the cake of troubles. For example a high school senior that has a low GPA, but a bright mind. This senior is going to have to work hard trough Junior college before able to transfer to a four year college. This was not in his plans at a younger age and it has him somewhat discouraged the last year of high school. He know what he has to d o to get into a two year college, which is very little, but he is still getting hounded on by everyone to do his best at the end. His family is not exactly rolling in money for him to go to a big college on, and a two-year college first would be a lot cheaper then straight into a four-year university. If he busts his but to slightly pull himself out of a whole at the end of the year then he may be able to get accepted to a big college with most of his friends, but could be afford it. The best thing for his family is the two-year college, yet in his eyes the best thing for him is to be with all his friends. Should he push himself to get further and put his family in debt so he can be happy, or does he do what will be easier for him and his family by sliding through the rest of high school and just going to the smaller college? You might be surprised how common this problem is among today’s high school kids. Yet it’s still not the worst thing that a teen can go trough. T he biggest problem would be a senior that is thinking he can not get any where in life not matter what he does. This is the guy that you will most often find in the back of class asleep because he doesn’t think he should try or put forth any effort. His parents have not paid enough attention in his eyes and for this he hates them for bringing him into this world. He is just waiting for the day when he turns 18 so he can drop out of school. He’s not thinking of getting a G.E.D. to go on to some sort of technical school though. He often speaks of the fact that he has a gun at home and when he turns 18 he can buy bullets. â€Å"This will be the fastest way.† He has mumbled to a few classmates that grow concerned that he might not be kidding around. And when they go to the guidance office to report what he has said, the consoler tells them that she is busy today and tomorrow, but she will try to get to it sometime Thursday around 10:30. This is the worst situation t hat I have ever heard of in my entire life. What could possible lead this teen to think killing himself is the only way out of his problems. And how could a guidance consoler put a problem like this off for two in half days with and real concern for the teen’s life. It makes you wander why we are so surprised when a teen walks into a school and blows himself away and takes a few with him. People try to blame high school shootings on television or heavy metal music because it is easier to blame something on someone else other than you. The world today puts to much pressure on teens growing up. Not to fight in war or get a job, but to just be a teenager. There is to many groups that we are supposed to fit into and to many standards that we have to meet in order to be socially acceptable. In order for today’s generation of teens to freely be accepted they are going to have to become adults and replace the older generation that are to stuck in their own ways to truly let u s be our on persons. Chapter 5 Our ideas are new and fresh and this often intimidates our elders that fear change and the fact that they will soon be replaced by younger, fresher, and more creative models. Today’s students are learning more and faster then thoughts before us. My opinion, which may not matter much to most, is that if we are developing are mind faster and better than we should be able to share our educated views with the rest of the world before the destruction that we already have to clean up gets any worse. Generations before us have already been careless with the environment and several other things that may not affect them in their own life times but will have to be dealt with by those to come. One large problem dealing with the environment is the landfill space or lack there of. While the methods used to dispose of the earths waste have been somewhat successful, there is only so much space that we can use before the trash that we produce over flows into ou r back yards. Just like Sara Senthia Silvea Stout who would not take her garbage out, if we don’t deal with this quickly growing problem it may be to late. Luckily some of the futures brightest minds are learning about the situation at an early age and will soon develop the knowledge it will take to clean up this mess. Today’s youth is also wising up to the fact that we can’t continue to keep killing each other in the streets over childish difference like territory that we don’t even own. We are learning to look past skin color and religion to see that we are all human. In order for the human race to continue to be that dominate species we must stop killing our own kind like savage beasts. The only sad thing is that it took an incidence like Columbine to really open our eyes to the problem of social discretion that is the poison of today society. Yet the only people you can blame for the problem with my generation’s views of each other is the adult s that taught them to think with such small-minded mentality. It seems that more often these days I’m opening the newspaper to find and article about a fifteen-year-old child genius that is already earning a degree from a large university and moving on to a high paying job in a very respected field. It amazes me what we are capable these days. We are a generation that thrives on out doing each other intellectually. There is no doubt in my mind that we will soon revolutionize the world, as we know it. In a society built by dreamers we are some of the best by far. Since most things have already been done or accomplished we are able to reach further and improve on what has been created or not even thought of yet. I personally can’t wait to see what we are fully capable of doing. Post Colonial Study of Heart of Darkness free essay sample

Not only is it thought provoking and exciting, but also considered to be one of the most highly stylistic in its class, blending its use of narrative, symbolism, deep and challenging characters, and of course a touch of psychological evaluation that Conrad is well known for. To get a full grasp of the novella, one must first understand the history behind the Congo and its colonization by the Belgians. As a result of ruthless colonial exploitation, involuntary servitude, and direct violence, the native people live in an impoverished state. As many as six million Africans died during the brutal rubber trade, overseen by the Belgians. Many are forced to be carriers, for people on jungle expeditions that need to move cargo from one place to another. These packages they carry on their backs, on rough footpaths through the jungle, weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. There are few, if any, breaks to stop and rest. It is a hard life, but this history sets up the action behind the drama in this book, as far as helping to smuggle ivory out, or carry supplies into the jungle nation. The recurring theme of darkness (a symbol for the reality of the society) and fear perpetuate the action, and utimatly envelops the characters that struggle with this dilema such as Kurtz. The message is the same however: colinization destoys at the native peoples expense, close-minded European views perpetuate racism in these nations, and evil is a driving and yet sometimes unnoticed force. Joseph Conrad was born in Berdichev, Poland in 1874. He first became familiarized with the English language at the age of eight, because his father translated works of Shakespeare and Conrad became interested in them. He was a very smart child, and did quite well in school. He further studied in Cracow and Switzerland, but his love for the sea beaconed him to explore, sail, and learn a new style of life. In 1874 he took a job on a ship, and thus begun his lifelong fascination for the sea and sea travel. After traveling around the world a bit, he got involved in gunrunning in the West Indies. He liked to gamble, and because of this addiction he racked up huge debts which led him to attempt suicide. His brush with death opened his eyes, and he then realized that changes needed to be made in his life. In 1878 he found himself in England, where he spent the next 16 years of his life in the British navy. This had a profound impact on his writing, and it really developed and deepened his passion for the sea. However, his sense of adventure had not yet faded away, and he found himslef in 1889 as a captain of a steamboat on the Congo River. He always wanted to go to Africa, and was drawn to her like his passion for the sea. His experiences there are what inspired Heart of Darkness (1902), and many people do not realize that he knew the Congo well, and actually spent some time of his life involved in the conflicts of the land. Conrad later returned to England in 1891 and worked as a sailor til 1894. He then retired from sailing and spent the rest of his life writing. He married, had two sons, but lived on a modest budget. He was a poor, and frequently got into trouble, but kept on writing. Finally he received some recognition for his work in 1910, and this is when his financial situation began to improve. However, his health was failing, but his pen grew stronger. He kept on writing and became quite popular in England. They even wanted to knight him in 1924 but he refused. He died that same year. Conrads contribution to the world of literature is profound and indifferent. Many people see him as just another writer, but to those who study post-colonial literature he can be seen as a beacon of hope and truth. He is telling the story so people can see what colonist do to the land in which they colonize: take it over, pillage, and destroy. Conrad was ther and witnesed the entire process, and it angered him to the point of no return. Top Dialogues Conrad can be linked to many authors that write about post-colonial literature. One author that finds truth in Conrads writing is Chinua Achebe and the novel Arrow of God. Not only is the setting similar, Africa, the similarities of how the natives are seen and persecuted by the colonist are unprescidented. Achebe and Conrad both use the word savage as a term to describe the native people, because this is how they were seen by their opressors. Granted, neither author believes these people to be savages, but throughout both pieces of literature the natives are degraded both verbally and phisicaly. The natives are seen as expendable and therefore the quality of life given them is not as important. Conrad uses the character of Marlow to utilize his own thoughts and perceptions of the people in the Congo. He continually ses them being beaten when they fall carrying packages, Europeans antagonizing them from boats as they travel past river villages, Kurtz commanding them around like a batallion of troups. He is angered by this and tries to change it, but by the time he gets to Kurtz it is too late because he has been pulled in by the darknes and is sick and pale. Marlow personifies a voice of reason, goodwill, and light. Kurtz personifies evil, darkness, and destruction. It even gets to the point where Kurtz is having the natives worshiping him as a God. Achebe similaly tries to utilize a character as a voice of reason, but it is too late. The natives trust the Europeans that come to the village, and they are basically destroyed. The goal is similar: to show how colinization perpetuates racism (see link below on the essay writen about racism by Achebe) and destroys traditional culture by use of assimilation. But in both cases, it is simply too late in the process for their characters to change things. Top Notes Conrad did navigate the waters of the Congo. He never wrote about it until he returned home to England where he wrote Heart of Darkness in 1902. He did keep a journal, and some of the excerpts from his journal can be found in the novella. The desolation of the land described in the book is an actual account of locations seen by Conrad. Over the years he spent there, he traveled the land and was shocked by the poverty of the Congo due to lack of funding. .Another important artcle of criticism is Ian Watts Conrad in the Nineteenth Century. It discusses several points and reinforces some of Achebes work. He did a whole series of essays on Conrad and they are highly revered. They would be great supplimental reading. Watt suggest that Heart of Darkness is Conrads first symbolic work, but also the only symbolic work done by him. Symbolism runs ramped throughout the piece, and it is suggested by Kimbrough that, Conrads earlier narritives are primarily objective, descriptive, and thematically clear; Heart of Darkness tends to be interior, suggestivly analytic, and highly psychological. In short, it introduces a new mode into Conrads ficton: the symbolic. Top Links *** www. Twelfth Night Comedic Conflict and Love in Trevor Nunn's ?Twelfth Night? Trevor Nunn's direction of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night takes away some of the confusion present in the reading of the text, which begins with the complicated love interests of the main characters. Having been the artistic director for the world famous Royal Shakespeare Company for eighteen years, Nunn is vastly familiar with adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Part of the comedy of this film develops from the first three acts of the play, which allow for a complex circle of interaction to develop within the film. Nunn's use of the prologue at the beginning of the film presents crucial information in an easy to understand, witty way. The film's prologue makes clear much of the play's primary confusion, and establishes the foundation on which the rest of the film may balance upon. Nunn's adaptation of Twelfth Night begins with the founding relationship in the play, the designs that Orsino expresses for Olivia. It is clear that this first interaction is the basis for others that occur, and it is also clear that both Shakespeare and Nunn utilize this interaction to create the comedic effects that happen because of the subsequent love interests. Orsino is not just an average courtly love, he is the Duke, and has considerable stature and respectability in his community. It is expected that his love for the Countess Olivia will be reciprocated, even in the midst of her grieving the loss of her brother. However, Duke Orsino's attempts at contact are met with disdain, but Olivia's lack of interest does not dissuade Orsino from continuing his pursuit. Duke Orsino is not a skilled romantic. His belief that he can compel Olivia into marriage through the expression of his feelings in messages demonstrates his lack of real passion in the situation and shows that he is of great stature, perhaps to belittle himself with courting. He is not Romeo hiding in the bushes for his Juliet, and this is one of the elements of separation that cause the comedic conflict to occur. If Orsino had taken it upon himself to persuade Olivia personally, instead of sending messengers, the outcome of the film would have been significantly altered. Both Shakespeare and Nunn support the importance of Malvolio's role through the love that he has for himself, as well as his love for Olivia. While Malvolio's love for Olivia creates a sub plot, including the actions manipulated by Maria's deception, this only builds on the comedic effect that is created by the other loves that develop. The comedic conflict is further developed in Malvolio's ?Puritanesque? wardrobe of his suit and shoes. This comedy seen in Malvolio's wardrobe is extended to the end of the film when Malvolio appears wearing bright yellow tights and cross belts. Malvolio's character is significant because he at first attempts to bring an air of respectability and chastity to the whole film, though his essential flaws and his inability to recognize the reality of people's feelings, including Olivia's, removes him from the position of moral overseer to a simple player in the game of love. Malvolio's error is related to his self-perceptions and his consideration of his own self-importance, rather than his caring and compassion for his mistress Olivia. The other character of significance is Viola, and she is important in the development of the comedic conflict that occurs. She is a noblewoman who disguises herself as a boy, and becomes a servant of Orsino. Orsino uses Viola as a messenger to persuade the steadfast Olivia to hear his pleas of love. The problem with this scenario is that in the process of winning a position with Orsino, Viola falls in love with him, thus her voice as a messenger for Orsino is complicated by her own feelings. The comedic conflict of love occurs primarily within this love triangle of Olivia, Orsino and Viola. Olivia falls in love with a girl pretending to be a boy, as Orsino subsequently falls for a ?boy?, who, fortunately for him, is in actuality a girl. Instead of persuading Olivia on Orsino's behalf, Viola, who is called Cesario as a boy, attacks the love of Olivia, complicating the film. Viola does not immediately recognize the affections

The Pentagon essays Hailed as the largest office building in the world, and home to the men and women that control the military, the Pentagon is a national symbol. Its rich history includes its construction, renovation and the September 11th attack. During 1941 and World War II, the United States deemed it necessary to build a new building to house all of its defense offices. The project order came from Franklin Roosevelt and within three days, the plans were drawn up and approved by Congress. Remarkably, only 2 days after that, the thirty-five million dollar project was started, September 11th, 1941. Within six months fifteen thousand workers, near the Potomac River, erected the first section of the Pentagon. Today the Pentagon is an amazingly large building covering over 20 acres at 5 stories tall. It is broken up into 5 wings, which can hold a total of almost 25,000 people. By the 1990s, the older and less modern Pentagon was in need of serious restoration. The idea of just doing away with the Pentagon, or using its space to keep records after the war was dismissed because it had become a national symbol in the United States. With the up and coming technological age of the twenty- first century, the building needed updated electronics, plumbing and heating and cooling. Computers were a huge cause of power failures in the Pentagon, and with their rise in the 1970s, they needed access to better wiring. The heating did not work well, and many sewage and water pipes were leaking or broken. Also there was the issue of harmful substances below the pentagon such as mercury and asbestos. All these things needed replacing and updating in the Pentagon. Finally in the mid 1990s, the order for renovation was given and a 1.2 million dollar project was begun. Epistemology Epistemology can be defined as the branch of philosophy that looks at the nature, origin, methods, as well as limits of human knowledge. It seeks to answer the question of how to distinguish true knowledge from false knowledge. One of the outstanding epistemological problems in Oedipus Rex is the ambiguity presented in terms of the nature and extents of Oedipus’ knowledge about his true origins (Carel 103). Many philosophers have argued that Oedipus may have been too ignora nt to figure out facts about his past. However, at the beginning of the play, his intelligence is well portrayed when he is the only man who has the ability to solve the riddle of the sphinx. This ambiguity brings forth the vagueness of the extent to which Oedipus can and should be held responsible for his actions, which are: killing his biological father and marrying his own mother. Sophocles tells the story of Oedipus in reverse: he starts with the ending and goes to explain how it happened. According to the oracle, the plague that has befallen Thebes will find no cure until the person responsible for the murder of King Laius is found and expelled from the city. Oedipus starts an investigation to reveal the murderer, but this investigation quickly turns into an investigation of Oedipus’ real identity. Initially the epistemology lies around finding an answer to the question â€Å"who did it†, but this changes course to the question â€Å"who am I?† (Foster 22)T he psychological journey of discovery takes up much of this story. Knowledge is supposed to end with gratification and satisfaction. However, in this story, epistemology led to a discovery that was more tragic than the events that led to the discovery itself. The Sphinx The word sphinx comes form the Greek verb which when translated means â€Å"to squeeze† or to tighten (Gosse 65). Some historians however argue that the word is a corruption of the Egyptian word â€Å"shesepankh† which translates to â€Å"living image† (Zivie-Coche and Lorton 9). In Greek mythology the Sphinx is represented as having a serpent’s tail, a lion’s hunches, a large bird’s wings and a woman’s breast and face. This malevolent creature is normally characterized as being merciless and treacherous. She is the demon of bad luck and destruction and kills and mauls those who fail to correctly answer her riddle. According to myths, the sphinx was the guardian of the gates into the City of Thebes. To be allowed entry, one had to correctly answer her riddle. The riddle is â€Å"which creature has four legs in the morning, two at midday and three in the evening, and the more legs it has, the weaker it is? It is said that no man had ever been able to give a correct answer to the riddle (10). Oedipus was the only one who gave the correct answer which was ‘man’. The TTLM initiative also calls on teachers to focus on the whole child instead of the subject. Teachers should put more emphasis on the teaching of good values and attitudes to the students, not their grades. In addition, teachers need to help students learn that the learning process is far more important than the results or the end product. Before jumping into the answers, teachers should treasure the teachable moment by throwing the questions to the students. Let them think and encourage curiosity. TLLM urges teachers to engage student more in learning and depend less on drill, practice and rote learning. Teachers should do more guiding, facilitating and modelling and do less telling so that students could take ownership of their own learning. Every student is different. Therefore teacher should apply various differentiated pedagogies to suit students learning. Student should be accessed more qualitatively over a period of time, and less quantitatively through one-off and summative examinations. Lastly, teachers should promote the spirit of innovation and enterprise among students. I come across one journal that was published in 2005 mentioned that in response to the TLLM policy, MOE was going to provide more time and space to teachers to do the right things for the students. To date, MOE has really made some moves to provide teachers more time; such as assigning a Co-curricular Programme Executives to each school, hiring more new teachers and introduced the adjunct teachers programme. However, we still see teachers rushing for syllabuses and busy preparing students for all sorts of exams. Not to mention the large class sizes and the accompanying heavy marking load, how could teachers stay fit physically and mentally with so many workloads? I do believe that most of the teachers would like to make their lessons livelier and have more flexibility in choosing the materials and teaching methods. I also believe that teachers do not wish their students go for tuitions. Euphemistically, the textbooks, syllabuses and teachers handbooks are said to guide teachers in teaching. As a matter of fact, these materials confine teachers way of teaching. Time allocated to each subject in school is just enough for teachers to run through the concepts and basics due to the tight syllabus. Eventually students would need to sit for the standardized tests, which decide their future. To score high for the standardized test, frequent and repeated practices based on the concepts and basics taught are inevitable. And this is the main reason for the increase of tuition centers in Singapore. A lot of parents have the habit of paving the way that would grant successfulness for their children. These include house moving and become school volunteers to get their children admitted into a good school; send their children to enrichment classes and tuitions in hope that their children could pass standardized test with flying colours. Eventually, their children could get admitted into the university, studying a popular subject which promise good prospect. For most of the students, they bow to the reality at a very young age. Since young, under the influence of the media, friends, community, teacher, school and parents, they got the impression that only by doing well academically; they could have a bright future. If they find the subject or what was taught is not going to help give them promising future, even though they know that is their strength or they have passion on that, they would not pursue them. Students rather give up their passions than face failures. Civic and moral education (CME) is supposed to be the subject that helps students develops their characters and values. Good values, attitudes and characters could also be taught in other subjects; but character development and values education are not their emphasis. Recently, MOE has just completed revising the CME materials, which claim to be more interesting and could engage students more. However, a lot of people do not see the importance of the CME subject; probably because of it is not examinable. Many mother tongue teachers have experienced their CME classes being hijacked by the math and science teachers to rush for syllabuses or to prepare students for exams. The hijacking becomes more frequent especially when the exam period is approaching. School leaders are aware of that but turn a blind eye to it. This indirectly acknowledges that the schools are still more prone to grades-centric instead of values-centric. Thus, it is not surprising that students would have the percept ion that CME is the least important subject and they are less likely learn the subject by heart. Singapore is a country that adopts a highly centralised education system and a strong top-down approach in policy-making. (Catherine Chua Richard, 2007) Changes made at the national level often may be difficult to put into practice at the school level. TLLM is one of them. Catherine Chua and Richard (2007) did a study by comparing the science curriculum between two top schools and two mid-level schools. The top schools appear to exercise more flexibility in their curriculum by introducing a more diverse programme. They are placing greater emphasis on research-based and higher order thinking skills, acquiring beyond the basic knowledge. This is in line with the MOEs initiative. The middle category schools are also embarking on introducing and reinforcing some incentive programmes in their schools, especially for those less able students. However, an important observation shows that there was no corresponding decrease in the number of topics taught in class. On the contrary, the numbe r of periods allocated for the science lessons increased in 2005. They also found that the programmes offered by the top schools are more intensive and research oriented than those offered in the middle category schools. By introducing more intensive programme and increase the number of periods, both top schools and middle level schools actually did not put TLLM into practices. These schools rather play safe by teaching more, and add more to the curriculum. This can has negative impacts on the school climate, as teachers will have less time to prepare, teach and interact with their students. Sooner or later, teachers would develop resistance towards government initiatives. (Catherine Chua Richard, 2007) PSLE test is the ultimate test for all the primary students. This test focus on the end result rather than the process of learning. From time to time, different initiatives, including TLLM are being introduced by MOE to better achieve the purposes of Singapore Education. However, PSLE tests on the whole remain untouched. School principals, teachers, parents and students know that no matter what the changes that will take place, at the end, it is the examination that matters. Thus, when MOE first introduced TLLM, many of the principals and teachers would just take that as another initiative that will come and go. In 2009, MOE announced that semester exams for Primary 1 2 would no longer exist. But later announced that mini test would be in place so that teachers could provide regular feedback on pupils learning to parents. So that is a good change or a bad change? Mini tests are still TEST. They could be the replicas of semester test and could end up having few of them throughout the semester. Students stress over exam is still there and hardly reduced. After six years of study, students still need to sit for the PSLE test. This also means that the pace of preparing the PSLE test would be increased once students step into Primary 3 seeing that the time given has been shortened by 2 years. The aims of education policy are to ensure that students not only master scholastic knowledge, but that they are equipped with the knowledge needed to perform well in the globalised economy (Seaton, 2002). In Singapore Education, the decision-making in curriculum policy always lie in the hands of the government. Thus, we can say that Singapore educational policies are the mirrors of the social, economic and political needs of a society. (Catherine Chua Richard, 2007) From the TLLM policy, we can see that Singapore government would like to mould the future leaders in becoming a confident person, a self-directed learner, an active contributor and a concerned citizen. Although TLLM encourages teachers to teach less so that student could learn more, what students actually learn are still very much depends on what would be assessed finally. We still see some schools hesitating to put TLLM into practice. Thus, I would like to comment that TLLM would be just another MOEs attempt to change the direction of education in Singapore school if MOE still continue its traditional reluctance to let go or downgrade the position of the examination system. Education in Singapore is not education but just a huge examination preparation exercise, namely, the high stakes examination system.

The Absolute Standards Approach is an appraisal method used to assess the performance of employees by presenting a detailed description of the employees’ actual behavior in comparison to a certain set of standards. In this type of appraisal format, the appraisers compare the employees to a certain set of standards, which may come in the form of checklists, rating scales, etc, rather than to other employees within the organization. The Absolute Standard Appraisal method has 4 techniques: Checklists, Essays, Critical Incidents, and Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales. Checklist is the most common technique used by companies. It is a rating containing statements describing both effective and ineffective job behaviors. Behavioral checklists are well suited to employee development because they focus on behaviors and results, and use absolute instead of comparative standards. An advantage of using checklists is that evaluators are asked to describe rather than evaluate a subordinate’s behavior. The supervisor weighs the high and low points on his list and comes up with an overall rating for employee performance. On the other hand, a disadvantage of using checklists is the money and time it can consume for the construction of its instruments. The essay method is a written narrative assessment for employee performance. The employers indicate the subordinate’s strengths, weaknesses, potentials and areas of improvement in the workplace. A disadvantage of essay appraisals is that they can be very time-consuming, and to a large extent, unstructured. It may also come as discriminatory and susceptible to evaluator bias, which may misrepresent the real picture of the employee or the performance. Critical Incidents are specific behaviors essential to doing a job successfully. Behavioral traits that employees exhibit in the workplace – both effective and ineffective, are documented in writing. Employers then analyze these incidents from which a checklist is developed, indicating employee’s critical incidents that either needs praise for successful performance or training for further improvement. Behaviorally anchored rating scales (BARS) are rating scales, which define scale points with specific behavior statements that describes the varying degrees of performance. The scales represent a set of descriptive statements, ranging from the least to the most effective. It combines the elements from critical incident and graphic rating scale approaches. The evaluator must then indicate which behavior on each scale best describes the employee’s performance.

Explication Essays - Writers, Igbo People, Fiction, Dead Mens Path Elisha Wallace ENGL 104, Sophomore Seminar I Explication The short story titled "Dead Men's Path" written by Chinua Achebe is about a man filled with hope trying to build a school which was once a ruin into a modern place of education. Even though he seemed to have good intentions his arrogance led him to fail and the short story ended with the school back to its unkempt state. The writer uses the priests dialogue to portray the theme of balance. My explication will be on the last six paragraphs of this short story in which Mr. Obi speaks to the priest and ignores his wise advice. This plot is a traditional "old versus new" where tradition goes head to head against modernization. In the end they realize that balance and a sense of understanding is what they need for peace. Mr. Obi is the new and young headmaster of Ndume school. He has a lot of ideas and changes he wants to make in order to elevate not only the school but the students as well. "Obi accepted this responsibility with enthusiasm. He had many wonderful ideas and this was an opportunity to put them into practice" (Kennedy and Gioia 187). One day Obi sees a woman crossing through the flowers in the compound and is informed that the village people cross through the compound to get to the burial. He blocks off the pathway and is quickly confronted by the priest. The priest is polite but firm in his opinion with Obi. He asks Obi for peace and balance in the hopes that Mr. Obi will open back up the pathway. But Obi is stubborn and insists that the village men and woman create a new way around th e school. "... I would suggest your constructing another path, skirting our premises I don't suppose the ancestors will find the little detour too burdensome" (Kennedy and Gioia 189). From this quote we can also see that Obi has a slight attitude and arrogance with his response to the old and wise priest. He is firm in his belief that the pathway is not of importance. A while later a young village woman dies and as a result the school is completely trashed and the protagonist, Obi, is left with a terrible review of his school. The setting of this short story contributed a great deal in developing the plot. The village is inferred to be small and tight knit with a strong sense of community. This helps readers understand why a large amount of the older village men and women are upset at Obi for blocking away the path to the burial. When the young woman dies it seems like effort of the community is what destroyed the school. "The beautiful hedges were torn up not just near the path but right around the school, the flowers trampled to death and one of the school buildings pulled down" (Kennedy and Gioia 189) "Dead Men's Path" is in third person omniscient. We can see that because the author uses words like he/she. This short story is omniscient because in one part of the story we can see the wife's point of view and how she thinks of her husband but the entire passage is usually in Mr. Obi's point of view. "He was stoop-shouldered and looked frail. But he sometimes surprised people with sudden bursts of physical energy" (Kennedy and Gioia 187). With this quote we get to see into the mind of the wife for just a moment. To find any symbols in this passage you really had to look deep and take everything as an interpretation of something else. I took the title, "The Dead Men's Path" as an object of symbolism. Not to describe the literal pathway to the burial ground but the path that Mr. Obi had chosen. The priest tried to show him the philosophy of balance. The philosophy of balance is an idea that shows up in many religions. It is the idea that you have to have a sense of balance in the world. Whether is be good and evil, right and wrong, or just simply up and down (Darren "The philosophy of balance").

He wants to get his point across which is fine, but he could have done it in a better way. This is historically relevant because every battle is historically correct. The way he put Lincoln’s assassination is correct also. He also describes Jefferson’s views of slavery correct also. In conclusion this is a very historically correct book. Article 1.2.2 of Institute Cargo Clauses (B) provides cover against damage or loss of goods transported caused by washin g overboard or jettison1. Article 1.2.3 provides insurance cover against damage or loss of the subject matter insured caused by entry of river, sea or sea water, into the vessel craft, place of storage or hold conveyance. In addition, Article 1.3 provides insurance cover against total loss of any package whether lost overboard, when unloading from or loading to, craft or vessel2. However, Article 4 provides some exclusion to the insured. According to Article 4.1, insurance policy will not cover against expense or damage brought by willful misconduct of the insured3. Analysis of the case The coffee cases which were taken to the dock were in good condition. When they were taken from the factory by Supreme Coffee Limited, none of them was wet or damaged. It is true to say so because Oriental Shipping Limited confirmed it. Although Oriental Shipping limited was not keen on safety of the coffee cases, it cannot be noted that the cause of damp was caused by spraying of water at the dock. There is no evidence to support this because the fault was not detected when the cases were loaded on to the ship. However, if only part of the cargo was damaged and not all, it will be difficult for the insurance company to be held accountable4. This case is similar to Nelson Marketing International versus Royal Sun Alliance Company of Canada case which took place in year 2006. In the case, the cargo was LTF (Laminated Truck Flooring) and it was moving from Malaysia to California. The cargo was damaged but the main cause was not known. It was no clear whether it was damaged due to moisture inherent or improper care in the laminated truck flooring. The ruling was finally made after 94 days of trial in the Lower Court where a decision of 92 pages was given5. According to the insurer, the exclusion of willful mischief of the insured was applicable. On the other hand, the owner of the cargo complained of the carrier’s negligence in handling and care of the cargo. According to th e court, the damages were not caused by the carrier’s negligence. It was caused by heat in the feeder vessels at voyage time and therefore, the insurer was held responsible. However, in the Court Of Appeals, the decision of the judge was reverse. Western Civilization Essay The themes dominating Netos poetry are quite indicative of the fact that the veracity and practice of luso-tropicalism, the idea that the Portuguese went to Africa to civilize and christianize Africans, and the notion that the assimilation project was a widespread one, were more myth than reality. The poems included in Sacred Hope illustrate well the oppression, apartheid, (un)civilization, and (un)Christianity brought to Africa by the Portuguese. The poem which in its English translation is called Western civilization (Civilizacao ocidental), constitutes a good example of that so-called civilization and Christianity brought to Angola (and other parts of Africa) by the Portuguese colonizers. The title of the poem might lead some readers to believe that what is to come is an apology for Western civilization and culture and for its good deeds in Africa. It could be suggested that such readers have fallen into what can be described as the Eurocentric trap that is, they went into the reading of the poem with the preconceived idea that Western colonizers did indeed go to Africa to civilize Africans. These readers will only be disappointed and even confused for what is to be painted in the poem is not civilization but rather (un)civilization. The poems title is in fact highly ironic: it is used by the poet to make the reader reflect about the true nature of Western civilization, see its many (un)civilized sites and make him/her question the motives behind the colonial enterprise. For example, in this poem, the houses of Angolans are described as Tins fixed to stakes / driven in the earth whose intimate landscape is complet[ed] by rugs (18). And these houses are full of cracks through which the sun enters just to awake its inhabitant, who is tired from twelve hours of slave / labour (18). The poet then proceeds to describe the endless hard work performed by the Angolan: Breaking stones / carrying stones / breaking stones / carrying stones (19). The repetition carrying stones / breaking stones, used three times in this stanza, is very successful in transmitting the intensity and never-ending hard work performed by the worker. The worker becomes a slave precisely because he never stops working; he works continuously without even being interrupted by harsh weather conditions; he works in the sun and in the rain (19). The poem ends by explaining and illustrating when, how and under what circumstances this slave worker dies: Old age comes early / A reed mat on dark nights / enough for him to die / thankfully / and of hunger (19). For even though the worker works very hard all his life, he ends up without the most basic necessities: no proper bed, no food and no light, and thus is grateful to die. Death represents freedom from a life of slave work; it represents the end of his physical and psychological oppression and immeasurable pain. This poem is indeed a good illustration of the (un)civilization, the (un)Christianity brought to Africans by the Portuguese: hunger, cold, physical and mental exhaustion, and alienation. To put it metaphorically, if the lights of the civilized did not reach the Angolans (as colonialists have claimed to be the case) before the arrival of the colonialist, they surely were not bright enough to illuminate the life of most Angolans after. The questions I would like to ask in relation to this poem are: will the reader feel enough revolt and disgust against Western civilization that he/she will want to work towards the independence of Angola? Will the sites of Western (un)civilization displayed in this poem be sufficient for the oppressor to see the true nature of the colonial enterprise and convince him/her to refuse to be part of such sordid business? Or will this poem just sound like the unfounded lament of an Angolan who is jealous of the so-called higher successes and intelligences of his colonial master?
